Talk to someone that shoes or trims horses or someone you know that uses one. Many times, due to the economy people can't afford to keep their horse(s). There many rescue horses also.

Even though I wanted to show in Dressage, my friend's ferrier told her of a horse. When I saw him 9 days ago, I fell in love, gave up the dressage dream to rescue him. He is a 16.2 hand, TB, Bay and she gave him to me, because she could not afford to feed him and he is 400 lbs underweight. I showed her his new home, had a vet and trainer evaluate within 48 hours so I could provide the appropriate care.

What ever you do, have someone go with you because it is an emotional time.

You could make threads, posts, comment alot so people know who you are, and i guess just do what you want really.

Fair warning, once you get into horses you will be hooked for life, in a good way. Welcome! So do you ride? have you taken lessons? Are there lesson barns near your home? People on line here are from all over so unless you know someone specifically it can be hard. Go to the yellow pages and look up riding stables or riding lessons. Meet people, get networking, talk to folks at the county fair, check out 4-H, Pony Clubs. Get your hands dirty, some barns offer lessons as trade for helping with pony rides. Many barns let young kids work the pony rides with parents permission and they can earn lessons. You can shareboard a horse which is a reasonable way to start riding once you know how to ride. And what is cool about that is as you get better, you can shareboard on a more advanced challenging horse. Owning a horse is an expensive thing, buying the horse is the easy part, it's the upkeep that will get you. If you take lessons your instructor can be helpful in finding you a horse, although be careful cause some will be out for themselves and not match you up with the right horse.

You could post a thread in the First Horse forum. Or you could read some of the posts about the same topic (wanting a horse). I'm sure you'll find a lot of info. Hope this helped.
