He was born a soft, buttermilk buckskin, but he shed it out and its grown back a grayish, mousy creamy color.
He doesn't have a stripe on his back like a dun or grulla, and his muzzle and around his eyes is a tannish, golden color. I'm really curious....His dam
is dark dun and his sire is palomino. I'm thinking that maybe he's going to shed into a dark buckskin, but he could turn any color. I'm pretty sure he
won't turn gray because he has black points like a bay with white socks and his mane is black with buttermilk at the base. Has anyone ever seen
something like this before? Do you have any good guesses? Thanks!

Buck is such a sweetie. I have been looking for someone that can give riding lessons and tips on care for your horse. I don't own one but I would like to one day after I finish school. I have been going to a friends and riding a little, but our schedules don't work out together a whole lot. I have been around horses enough over time to know that I love them and really want one. They are so calming to be around. I took riding lessons for a while but being in school it gets a little expensive. I would love to find a barn that I could get some riding practice in and maybe swap out for cleaning out stalls or other barn chores? Any suggestions?

any comments on my horse?

This is Gracie, my miniature mare. Savannah has been a HUGE part of our family since she was 8 months old, She came to us a very sick little colt, but with lots of love and care she bloomed into a beautiful mare. She was one of these once in a life time horses, she was my best friend! I will never forget seeing her gut shot and in a lot of pain. She called out to me as soon and she saw me, there was no hope to save her. We have a huge hole in our family now, she was our driving and riding horse but more then that she was our friend. I trained her all her life, she did tricks, we were going to send in our Level 1 parelli natural horsemanship tape to finish level 1. she was my Handicaped brothers riding horse and when my little nephews wanted to ride it was Savannah who was there first and always happy to be ridden. We just want other to beware, and to know that this has happened. I never want anyone else to go through this, we will never get over this huge loss. Thank you so very much for your time.
Robyn Meissner
Hellooo. My name is Anna and I own 4 full sized horses and 3 miniature horses. I live in Northern Idaho. I've been a horse lover my whole life and have grown up with horses, I've done some showing but mostly trail ride, which I LOVE. Alright, enough about me...here are my horses:

Boogie, 26 yr. old QH gelding. I rescued him this early spring from starvation.

Stormy, 9 yr. old Egyptian Arabian mare, she was an orphan and I've had her since she was 3 days old and trained her myself.

Shadow, 6 yr. old Morgan gelding. He's my main trail horse currently and he's an AMAZING trail horse, he's gotten me up/down several pretty extreme mountains.

Cody, 3 yr. old Breeding Stock Paint gelding, I bought him this spring to trail ride and hope to maybe get into some gaming.

Kowboy, 4 yr. old, 35" tall miniature gelding. I've had him since he was 5 months old. I lease him out to families with children and he teaches them about horses. :)

Spirit, 2 yr. old, 27.5" tall miniature gelding. He was born and raised here at home. He will be doing therapy work visiting nursing homes hopsitals and has/will be attending lots of different events, horse expos, horse shows, etc.

Ruckus, yearling 28.5" tall miniature gelding. I bought Ruckus this spring from a breeder in Kansas, to have as a companion for Spirit, Ruckus will also be coming along with Spirit for nursing home/hospital visits and any events/places we go to.

And that's everybody! Whenever I position her at the mounting block, she backs up just as I'm about to mount (I actually think I heard her chuckling to herself once when she did this). Anyway, this is a new "trick" that I'm having some difficulty dealing with. It takes several attempts before I can actually mount up. Once I'm up there she is very good and responsive. Until recently, she always stood nicely for mounting. " ofcourse now in days is whats in, to have a long maned dancing horse. You cant go in a parde witouth having a horse that does a constant bad piaffe, constantly being tugged at the mouth and whipped to achieve this, eventually horses get so stressed, or irritated, that its common to see them rearing, and bucking constantly. Now i moved to somewhere else to continue my riding education at a better riding school, doing hunter/jumpers. But a big part of my trainning has involved the early stages of dressage, all the way to second level and the early stages of third level.
*we bought ligon. a 3rd level dressage PRE. He was ridden in a snaffle, and was a bit hard on the bit, but once you started collecting him and engaging hindquarters he became as soft and as resposinve.

*I dont see these horses very often since i moved out of town. i ocasionally come and ride during vacations. But as i came back, i'd discovered that these "profesional dancing horse trainner" had gotten his kid to ride my dads horse. the stupid kid had tried to make him dance like all the dancing scruffy ponies over here,. the horse actually bolted with him on. now we have this stupid trainner riding him, tugging at his mouth, whipping him and actually pinching Ligon's ears to make him say "yes and No". "ill have him dancing in less than 15 days"

Can you imagine that? make a horse piaffe in less than 15 days??? that wouldnt be achieved unless some serious beating were involved.

I was completely mad, angry and upset to hear that dad had allowed some complete idiots ride our gentle and lovely Ligon. and the fact that he had bolted with someone on, was a bit shoking. he would never do anything like that unless treated wrong.

Dad has our charro groom ride him. he is as bad at riding as any charro, with the silly ideas that the main goal of riding is to make a horse "dance". Poor ligon has been tugged in his mouth so much now that his lower jaw is stiff, and not as soft as he once used to be. Despite my efforts on keeping him in a snaffle, they ignored me and "upgraded" to a poloh Pelham witouth giving other softer bits a try. I was not happy.

Pablo *our charro groom* kept on riding him, no legs, alot of hand. the horse was being constantly hyperflexed, he would use severe spurs to make him "piaffe" more and more. Now ligon, once a sweet gentle horse, reared and buck and bolted.

First time i rode him with the pelham, i tought the bit was too hard for him, the horse would hyperflex at the slightes use of pressure. i used a french link snaffle, and he worked just fine, and told the grooms not to use the pelham with the andalusian. But they ignored me. and kept on using the pelham once the horse bolted with a rider on again.

* Now i come back again. my lovely dressage horse ruined, by non toughtful hands. it burdens me that such a lovely horse has now been riden wrongly and the outcome of it is not pretty.

*Horse will try to fight the bit, has grown hard on the mouth *with the pelham on* he will bolt, he wont allow you to use the leg aids, because he will bolt. He rears, lacks of rythm, since he always wants to gallop. no side flexions, hyperflexes at some point. he back up when he comes to a halt. ETC. IM so Upset. Despite my efforts to educate whomever is riding him. no one ever listens to me. because i am "crazy".

the fact is no one understands the meaning of dressage, and who would ever listen to a 17 yr old girl, in a country full of male riders who dont like advice.

a Dressage horse is not a Charro horse, and unlike them, he does not dance out of fear, he has been tought to do piaffe out of collection, softness and impulsion.

Dad, despite my constan explanations, he is not willing to listen to me. and he is sending our 3 year old spanish horse, to a "Dacing horse" trainner. and he allows our dumb groom to keep on riding Ligon.

"he came in as a wonderfull dressage horse, and now he is a ruined horse" now im the bad person in the picture. im mad, im unhappy to see this horses being trated in such way, because the only thing they care about is having them "dance". not rideability, but an unhappy horse that will bolt at the sight of a whip.

I'm sure once i come back, if i keep on riding him constantly ill get him back to his old self. but its sad that i'm not in town as much as i'd like to. To supervise them to make sure no harm is done by untoughtfull thinking and selfish purposes. I'm taking care of my Warmbloods else where, and im focusing on them, as my jumping and dressage horses, they are doing just fine. i wish Ligon were not ridden at all, i wish sometimes i could bring him along and retrain him as the good dressage horse he used to be. But that is far from happening.

Ikeep on explaning pablo wat to do and wat not to do, but he just snaps at me, and does not listen to my advice. I've been to clinics, i've been riding pretty much with some amazing top notch trainners. and now he doesnt like a 17yr old girl telling him that his riding Fails, he should go back to mucking stalls.

Ligon Backed Up very well, and pablo started backing him up allot because he tought it looked "pretty". at some point bakcing up horses too often can be bad. at such point it can also be interpretated as a way of punishment. backing up can help engage quarters, but constan backing up a horse can lead to hyperflexion, and bad habbits.

My dad does not know much about horses, and thus all my family ignore wat i say. at the end of every case it turns out that i am right. That if they had listened to me, they wouldnt have to deal with certain problems. The loss of a foal, when i said the foal was ill and we needed vet assistance as soon as possible. they snapped at me and told me to not be over exagerated. in the end iwas right, but it was too late.

I was right about sand as a bedding was a bad i dea, i was ignored, as a result, horse had a colic. I was right about how bad of a trainner this charro was when dad whanted one of our friesians to dance, i had started the horse, he eould work on the bit, he would do everything perfectly. when the horse got back, his jaw was destroyed, he would rear, he would not lower his head he would be inverted, he was then eventually sold. but i was sad, and cried. Horses can be ruined just like that. Dad had agreed never to make another one of his horses learn to dance by the cruel charro methods. But now .. his friends have been telling him how much he needs a dancing horse. and so on...giving him bad advice. Dad is sending our horses to some Charro to teach them how to dance.

Untill now. Has This ever happened to YOU???? an uncareless rider ride a lovely horse and as an outcome - bad habbits - ruining it mouth ect?????

I'd Like to hear stories, and maybe some better adviceo n how to aproach the situation better.

Side Reins

Okay, so I got a pair of side reins for Christmas last year, and I tried them on my horse, but I had no clue how to put them on because there were no snaps of any kind, only a loop at one end. I know how to put on side reins, but these aren't like any wide reins I've seen or heard of. They're leather with a long insert of rubber in the middle. Here are some pictures:

They don't exactly fit together completely, but you get the picture. Here's a more close up of the buckle end, if you need it:

How in the world do these attach to the bit or the saddle? Has anyone seen this kind before?

One question on how to use them(if I can get them attached). Gilly doesn't accept contact very well, and usually puts her head up instead of reaching for the contact. We don't do dressage, but I don't want her hollowing her back so much. Will side reins help with this? I know the whole argument about side reins being a shortcut and everything, but I'm not going to rely on them. I'm just going to try to teach her how to accept contact more without me riding so it's better when I do ride her.

Any Plus Sized Riders on here??

Hey all! I Just wanted to know if there are any other plus sized riders on here! Post pictures and be proud to be who you are!! I'm a plus sized rider, and it took me a long time to be comfortable in a world of stick think riders! But now Im comfortable with who I am! So would love to meet the other plus sized riders on here!

waterproofing wood

can anyone tell me what can be used to waterproof wood that horses will be around.

New Project Horse

Well, I haven't been getting any answers or comments anywhere else so I'll try here :)

I got a new project horse named Cricket. She is a 5 year old QH mare about 14.3-14 hands. She is totally inexperienced and was originally ridden by a little girl who knew zip about riding.

When I went to test drive her, her reins weren't even connected to the bit correctly, but the bridel itself! So this tells me she hasn't been pulled on her mouth too much. And it shows. She's ridden in a snaffle D ring and is very sensitive. But when you go to stop she hauls to a stop reluctantly and dosen't like to stand still for long. She also just hangs her head idolly when we ride. I'd like her to be balanced and more collected-ish. Another thing is she dosen't like to turn right. It's really weird but you have to really crank her head around and I REALLY don't want to inadvertantly mess up her already relatively softish mouth.

Today just to see what happens, I rode her in a straight bar snaffle and she did maybe even better. Is a straight bar more harsh or less harsh or equivalant to a reg. snaffle?

I'm very pleased to see how responsive and such a QUICK learner she is! 30 minutes in the ring and she was already responding very well to my leg cues (right, left, go, etc).

I really like her. She seems to be very docile and willing to try whatever is in front of her or what I ask her.

So the questions arise:

-I'd like to get her balanced. I've asked this question before, but didn't take everything quite so seriously because Sunny is gaited and 'collection' is really different in the gaited world. So how do you get a trotting horse balanced? Is it along the same lines?

-She is iffy turning right as mentioned. Do I just continue to turn her getting her used to flexing? Serpentines, figure 8s, etc?

And here are a few pictures of her. My riding was the pitts so I covered myself up entirely. Maybe if I can get some better pics later of us in sync I'll post them.

< Head 'set'. This is how she holds her head. I know horseless hates that word, but I can't think of another word...

< I rode her in my Aussie because it fit her better than Sunny (his back is a bit better by the way). I wasn't sure if I should be applying contact to her mouth or not so I left it neutral.

< Again.

< Unfortunately, this is the only confo shot I could get. Her stupid hoof was ticked and she wouldn't 'unitck' it. If you can't critique it, no worries, I'll get a new one tommorrow (my camera's finally working!). Is she a bit fat?

Please help :) Any comments, tips, etc are appreciated!

Drama in the barn

Hey guys, i've been gone for a while, I had the swine flu... :P

My barn where Sierra is has a new horse, I think I've mentioned her before. She's a 16 hand paint named bell, older mare that knows pretty much all the tricks, fun horse actually but tests her newbie owner alot.

So this newbie owner has gotton to the point where she can't even tack up her horse. She's asked my barn owners daughter to train the horse for her. So I was mucking stalls and was watching the daughter chases this horse, trying to get the halter on, then try to tack up or put the bridle on at least and after an hour, she gave up and used a rein as a halter and led the horse to go get a bosal, which is absolutly the wrong equipment for this horse.

After watching her fail at that, i tried to help, but gave up after i got a death glare or two. So two hours later, she finally has the bosal on and barebacking her and her mom comes out, complains that her daughter isn't being firm enough, blah blah.

I'm feeling a mom/daughter vibe like the whole "I'm disappointing in you" thing because the daughter isn't what the mom is expecting. So i feel bad, and don't wanna get in the way, but I do wanna help so I suggested a headstall without a browband, which i've heard, the horse doesn't like its ears touched.

Any suggestions because I feel akward coming when she's around and I really don't like that feeling, I know this isn't really a horsey subject, but at the same time it kind of is...

Need a farrier in Minnesota

Hi all,

It looks like my husbands job will be taking us to the Brainerd, Minnesota area. In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today?

2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred?

3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle?

4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal.

5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate.

THANK YOU! In August he and I had a great fall on some black top, and I broke my Tibia. He was ridden from August-October for me, but slowly. (It was just trail riding.) I got my cast and boot off in October and we are slowly coming back to working on the pattern and more. He lost some of his muscle definition from me not riding him everyday like I did before and I was wondering what I could do to strengthen/develop them. He wasn't very strong in his butt area before and I also would like help/advice on strenghtening them. Right now we are working on roll backs, figure eights, and slowly are working on the barrel and pole pattern...thank you in advance for the replies and I hope you all can give me some good advice. :) All types of exercises are welcome also. :)

SMB Boots

I am trying to decide what kind of boots to get.
