Just intorducing myself!

Hey!! I just wanted to introduce myself! I am a new horse owner, and new on this forum. I have a 16.2 hh OTTB. She's a 13 year old mare, that is the love of my life! I keep her on my family's mini farm at our house. I will probably be asking a lot of questions on here!

I'm not getting the preg mare....I am most likely getting taffy!!!! The lesson horse who was neglected and came to the barn and then we bnded and hes always has been my fav horse and the barn owners would sell him to me!!! only $1000!! Though he IS 20 I though he was 10 but he is the horse I dreamt of yrs .....hes the horse ive been ment to have....

Horses we Rescued ~ Whats your story?

We all have managed to help horses in one way or another. Have you rescued a horse? whas it being abused before you purchased it ? what the story behind it. ill tell some about some of my horses.

Mariana whas bought in mexico, she whas being raced by her owners. mexican races are not regulated by any asosiation, theres no such thing as doping and well horses get drugged, they have their tendons cut in some cases to block pein issues and so on. It is also tought that the horse must be skinny in order to run faster, the leaner it is the faster it will run...(dont know if this true, but i dont believe it.) She whas clearly underweight, had a whole in her hindquarter from previous injury, somehow she managed to get hit by a train. o.O Her last race ever, she whas at the starting gate, btu she spooks with something, the gates open, she rears and falls on her side. the jockey managed to escape, but mariana whas stuck inside, she got all of her legs cut. once she managed to get up, the jockey grabbed her, got on and raced her like that. even tough it whas pointless. the race had been lost. Next day we took her home. she whas in bad shape, legs swollen, huge cut on her hind left leg. we called a vet, because previous owner didnt whant to spend a penny on her. she had to sleep a whole night like that.

Now she will never be raced again. she is used as a trail horse, tough shes being trained western by some charro trainner. i cant really say if hes doing a good job trainning her. like most OTTB's , shes afraid of whips, and has a very hard mouth, is very stiff on the right side and so on.

when she arrived. most of the cuts where on her left side. so their hard to see, and most where on her hind legs.

Ok I lease a 13 yr. old breedstock mare and the woman that owns her wants to sell her! I really want to buy her but I want to no the costs of a regular month Ive never owned a horse before but dont think Im not expericed but what are the relistic costs of everything and can someone help me figure out what kind of jobs I can do like babysitting and stuff to help pay for that stuff!!!! thanks!

Here is my first horse JKK Smooth Sugar aka *Honey*. She is a 91.41% Foundation Quarter Horse. She is AMAZING! She has taught me so much and really boosted my confidence levels...Considering I have only been riding a year, that is saying a lot. So what do you think of her?

hi umm i need some help. I really would like to know if i am really ready for a horse to call me own. it seems like every one has a horse but me. and i would wondering if any one could tell me what to look for to see if i am ready, and some tips to help. So i should tell you that i can w/t/c, handle rearing bucking horses (i rode one today she was being bad) i have been riding for 7 years, ridden lots of different horses, taking/took horses medical and safety courses, have 1,500 saved for horses and some other things to. so pls comment and leave tips in what i need to do and should do. and if i am ready! thanks

He is a 6 or 7 yr old OTTB. He is a BIG baby and loves attention and EVERYBODY. He's a lover. Such a cutie.

I dont ride him yet but hopefully this weekend.

His racing name was Hunters Pride or Hunters Prize.

My First Horse Having HER First Baby, And This Is a First Foal For Me too!

Looking for any tips and advice on how/what to do for mare and baby for a first timer for both mare and me.

I been trying to read up on things. Any advice or tips will help.

Some info about my horse and me:

My mare a 5 year old Palomino Quarter Horse. She is my first horse I got her when I was 19 years old. I have had her for almost 3 year now. I bred her July 2007 but she aborted the baby for reasons unknown when she was about 4 1/2 months pregnant. So I tried breeding her again in 2008. Thought she was bred in July but she came in heat in August. So we put her with the stallion again and hopefully had a successful breeding. If pregnant, she is about 5 1/2 month along (due around July 17, 2009). And it will be her first baby.

This is also a first for me. I have never raised a foal before. We had horses when I was little but got rid of them when I was 7 years old. My mom don't remember too much about raising foals and taking care of the pregnant mare since it has been over 15 years since we last had horses. Alot might have changed since then too.

Any advice or tips will help.

I'm getting my first horse! I've been share-boraded Princess (26 yr old gray arabain) and I'm planning on stopping and I found the perfect horse for me!!!!! Her name is Rose, she is a 19 yr old bay arabian. She can jump and do dressage very well (I will be learning on how to jump on her and do my first shows) She is very trustworthy horse but to perfect her I will have to work (I want to work on Parelli)...IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!

My family is in the process of buying a huge house that has ten acres on it. I want to buy a horse again.

I am sixteen years old, my family will help provide the finances, I know a bit about horses. When I was nine years old a family friend got us into horses, I have owned three. The first horse was beautiful and drugged up, we had him for about three months he had a terrible biting problem.The second one was my lightening, I loved her, but she would kick my mom and was to green for me at that time. My third horse was Shalimar, I loved him so much. He was my boyfriend. Beautiful, he was a great jumper and used to be showed in his early years. Great to ride, he liked to go fast but he knew MY limits. I bonded with him so much, I would just hop on his back in the middle of the pasture with no saddle or anything and spend the day with him. It was AMAZING.

But eventually all my horse loving friends moved away, we had to change from a 60-70 acre barn with lots of other horses to a 5 acre barn with two donkeys. My once wonderful horse developed terrible habits thanks to the pervy donkeys. He couldn't run which gave him all this extra energy. School often overwhelmed me to the limit of not being able to visit him every day.

I felt terrible, seeing all these things happened made me lose interest. We sold him to my trainer, who ended up competiting in shows with him and put him in a wonderful, expensive huge stable. He was happy [:

I had him for three years. Now three years later, I have been thinking about horses like crazy again, reading every article, story, anything I can get my hands on. We may be moving (probably) on a foreclosure nearby. I want another horse. But I am a junior I have three more years here before I go off to college a few hours away. (I'll be doing the local junior college for two years to get my basics) Would that be unwise? Unfair? I have missed horses since I sold Shalimar, but I don't want to board somewhere I couldn't visit everyday. Now I could have a few horses on my property.

Also, what do you think the price would be monthly to own a horse on your property? The place already has a barn (it needs fixing up, but it's workable)

Super long, but I want the truth and I needed to tell someone. (My mom doesn't want me brining it up until we FOR SURE have the house. But I have a feeling we are going to get it. They talk about it all the time)

I Might Start Leasing a Horse; Advice Please!

So, I found this barn that I absolutely love, and I rode this horse that was amazing. I might start leasing him. I was wondering what questions I should ask the trainer and the owner, what details I should know about, what type of lease agreement is best etc. This is going to be my first lease, so any advice is welcomed and needed!

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't sure if I should put it in the General Discussion or the First Horse section, but since it regards leasing my first horse, I'm hoping its in the right spot!

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for stopping yourself from jumping ahead of the motion. (legs swinging back, up really high on neck, that kind of stuff)

See how her leg has swung back, how do you stop yourself from doing that?

I just got my first horse! I've been riding for 7 years and i finally got my first horse. His name is Hunter and he's a 6 or 7 yr old Thoroughbred fresh off the track! (dont worry we're working on basics now).

He's one of the biggest babies ever. He is constantly mooching and trying to get treats out of you. He also loves attention and while he's out in the arena he will come running to you if you walk to the fence.

His first time out of the stall in 2 weeks or so. =D

Sorry if there's any repeats my preview button isn't working. But i kinda went post crazy. Lol. Enjoy the pics..

Also any show names you have (dont have to have Hunter in them) thats greatly appreciated.

Also if anybody wants to critique his conformation they can.

Halter Training 3 Wk. Colt

Hi! We're trying to halter break our 3 week old colt, Buck, and need some advice. His halter is a tiny, foal halter but its too big and slips down his neck. He also pulls back really hard and it takes someone to push him, one to pull him and one to lead mom to even get him to move a little! I'm not sure we're getting that far. We've tried using a butt rope with his halter as well. I'm sure there's a better/easier way to do this! LOL Thanks!

It was quite expensive boarding him, driving to the barn everyday, paying for the vet etc, but the memories I shared with him made it worth the while. Even though it would be a risk to purchase another horse (especially with this economy), should I do it? Please help me!

Star my first horse

My first horse was a Quarter/Arabian mare. She was gray with a star, strip and a snip. In her younger days she was black, with white hairs throughout her coat and a redish tint streaming over the top of the black. She was kinda like a roan but, every year she would be a different color, and roans don't turn different colors. My 4-H advisors' and friends thought I bought a new horse every year, It was pretty cool. When she passed away she was almost white. When she turned about 6 yrs old you could not even tell she had that star, strip, and snip. She was my best friend for many years. When I rode her it was like we were one. We had a very special relationship. She will always be my favorite horse and I will always miss her very much.

Should I get my first horse?

I think I'm going to get my first horse! But I would like some advice first.

First some backround for those who dont' know me and my story.

I'm 14 and share-board a 26 yr old gray arabian named Princess, I can never get ahold of the owner and it can be very frusterating at times. It's only $75 a month for 6 days a week and I pay for it all myself.

THE HORSE-

Hes a 15 yr old gray(white) arabian (HES GORGOUS!!!) he was a hunter/jumper but was neglected and the barn has him now (I think his owner left him) He is barn sower and is VERY smart. He can be dangerous at times but is REALLY sweet and LOVES to be groomed. He has confinedment issues but he ground ties so its not a huge issuse. The barn has been opened for over 20 yrs and a horse has never gotton colic..the horse has never ben sick or have had any feet problems. He barn owner is really nice and he really trusts me even though Im 14. One of the ladys who owns a horse there that is training the arab said she would help me train him. I wouls share board him out to my friend who loves ground work. The boarding is $265 a month......

First Horse from Rescue ???

I'm looking into purchasing my first horse in 30 years. I grew up with horses, but they were sold off before I had the chance to really appreciate them. Now, in my 40's, I'm researching my options on a tight budget. Knowing there are so many horses in rescue organizations, I wonder if looking there first might be a good start.

peanut is a fleabitten gray throughbred who hangs her tongue out the side of her mouth when shes happy. she is a very fast, hyper horse but is a wonderful hunter! shes the happiest horse in the world except when im with another horse. shes very tall by the way.

Horse Breeds

Hello its Miranda and I was wondering which breed do you prefer? I like 5 main breeds from what I have learned.#1 is an arabian because they are so graceful, fast and wild. #2 is a mustang because there pride, wildness and and you can get untamed ones they round up for 500$ not 5,000$. #3 is thourobred because those are racehorses and usaully small. #4 is a apollusa because there neat history and buitful markings. #5 is a paint pony because there pretty and can be fast and kind. What do you like?

Ok, I am not trying to pry or anything, some very good horses have been bought at a bargain and some very expensive horses sometimes turn out to be not so good. I thought it would be interesting and maybe help some perspective first time buyers get some ideas of what to expect to pay. Feel free to post additional info. such as did they work out? was they what you thought they would be? Do you still have them after you learned to ride or did you trade for something more advanced? What would you do different when purchasing your next equine?

Here is my story, the first horse I bought was a 15 hand gelded bay mule nothing special but he would ride, pull a wagon and work in the log woods skidding logs, he cost $1000.00. He was about 10 or 11 when I got him from a horse trader who had got him at a sale. He had obviously been whipped bad at one time, he was very leary of anything that looked like a rope and was hard to catch to the day he died, which was a couple months ago in his late twenties or early thirties. He never offered to buck or do anything stupid, my nieces and nephews would ride him when we went to the chuck wagon races. but If he got tired and could bluff you he would, and then he would go where ever he wanted which was usually back to the camp or the other animals to stand and do nothing! The good thing about him as with all the mules I have had is he was the same to ride whether you had just rode him the day before or 3 months ago, he never forgot what he was supposed to do.

This is my first horse, Coco. My mom bought her for me a few years back.

She is a 17 year old Percheron cross mare. She is a neglect/abuse case. But once all of her fear issues were past, she became the most sweetest horses in the world. I ride her English in a bitless bridle. She does enjoy being ridden :D

This is the first horse that I bought with my own money, Annabelle.

I bought her for $275. She is an Arab draft cross, three years old and already pretty tall. She too has a good personality and one that appears to enjoy doing work. She is broke to ride but I haven't gotten on her back yet. I got her so cheap because she was off to the slaughter house as well as 24 others (don't worry, none of them made it there!). My family, neighbors, and I got together and saved the herd.

okay so im just kinda venting now cuz im a little frustrated...

my parents r really frustrating me because i have EVERYTHING worked out for a new horse im going to be leasing (i found the boarding farm, got deals with the farm for cheaper board, checked it out by myself and got a deal with the farrier etc etc, found a reasonable coach, and found the horse back in june ALL BY MYSELF) and i even got a job a couple months ago (without any help) at a horse farm so i could pay for everything with my own money. im moving this horse because where he is right now its about 45 mins away and im moving him to a really nice farm just down my street.

i just need my parents to sighn the contract (im not 18 yet). they r very hot and cold about this whole thing. they tell me they do everything for me when it comes to horses even though i was the one who organized everything without any help!

then, if i forget to do something (eh hem put dishes away, or if i dont do what they say RIGHT AWAY) or if i get into one little slip up immediatley their like" okay, no horse for u" or "i dont think u should do this whole horse thing" and they are always threatening to not sighn the contract if i act like a typical teeneger for one second.

im starting to regret getting a horse becaue it seems like just one more thing for them to take away from me :(

ive worked so hard for this, earned some independence and respnsibility and ive put some much research and effort into this and now im beginning to regret this cuz of my parents. sorry if i sound like a spoiled little kid but it just bugs me how its with MY money and ive done all the leg work and i thought they wouldve been proud of me....

Ok i just found out that This horse i ride. Her name was Lilly. She was really close to my Heart and i am soooooo SAD!!!!!! She was really close to my heart and I will miss her ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
