I'm really excited for her because she really deserves him. Emily has always loved horses, but her parents are divorced and all that good stuff--needless to say her mother could never afford a horse. Anyways, she got this beautiful 8 year old, 16.2 hand, bay, warmblood gelding. His name is Tuscan but Emily wants a show name for him that includes the name Tuscan in it. SHe wanted me to help but I've run out of ideas! I've tried Tuscan Sunrise, Tuscan Sunset, A Tuscan Dream, and a few others. She says she likes them, but wants a few more choices. We are currently (weather permitting) up to the stage where I am ready to canter him. I did once, he only took about 1 1/2 strides each way, but really, that was enough for me, all I wanted him to do was canter. We have not gotten the chance to try again, the round pen has been too wet, but when i get the chance, I will take it! He is not a lazy horse, or dull. All it takes is a slight squeeze to walk, a slightly bigger one to trot, but he responds nicely, so it puzzled me that he was so reluctant to canter. I have a verbal cue that means canter, and that's nice and solid, but even when I used that, he refused to canter, and just trotted faster. -On the lunge, when he's trotting, and I give him the verbal canter cue, he always goes straight into a canter, he doesn't trot faster and then canter.

Does anybody have any tips for helping me with this? I'm not exactly sure what the problem was, so I'm having trouble finding an answer. I also got a new horse, he came in yesterday and he is a lease this time. He also has a few fun games to play so he's going to be keeping me busy. He's finally gotten comfortable and i trust him with all my heart.

But since i've gotten more confident i have wanted to start doing more than just walking with him...I ride bareback a lot because im trying to have a closer feel/bond with him, but i also ride english and western i really don't have a preference. When i bought him the owners told me, that he rides both english and western, jumps and a few other things...but these people lied to me about a lot (it's a long story) so my biggest concern was to get him home asap.

I did ride him before i brought him home and when i did it took every ounce of leg, i had to get him into the trot and when i did he was only in it for about 3 strides(he was in a western saddle)...the owners also told me he had not been worked in over 14 months (they live almost 2 hours away and had 12 other horses at the property and just ran out of time between his owner going back to school, having kids etc.)

I have been trying to keep as much of a routine with him as possible with working him but with it being winter and the ground not being so good, i can't do much just yet. I have lunged him multiple times and, i have gotten him into the trot without so much as saying it and occasionally a snap of the whip to the ground, and he goes right into it. He stays in it for about half the circle but than goes back to the walk but he has no issue going back into it when i get after him for it. He is slightly overweight and not as fit as the other horses at my barn but i am assuming this is due to not being worked for 14 months before i got him.

I am going to tack him up in ny english saddle tomorrow (weather permitting) and try to get him to trot again with the assistance of a crop if i can't get him to move with just my legs. Does that sound like a good idea?

I am just posting this here because if anyone has any feedback or ideas to help i'd greatly appreciate it. Also when he is out in his paddock i see him canter all over the place when he gets excited for more than just (half a circle :) ) I'm just not sure if he is being a little stubborn or if i should be calling the vet to check him out and see if there might be an issue with his back or something else?

He's a stocky 14.2 hand appy, i'm 5'2'' weighing at 165 pounds.

Thank you for any and all advice.

Am I ready for ownership?

Hey guys! But I wanted to know if you had any suggestioins or what YOU think. so i'll give you some Info on what I can do. (Bye the way I ride English pleasure.) Thank you so much. Your opinion is important to me. :D

~I can Walk, trot, canter, ground poles, vertical jumps, crossrails

~I know my diagonals, too.

~I know I will have to find/make time in my schedule to care for a horse and Im willing to give up my other activities if it means caring for a horse.

~I know leasing is an option. I might do that before I buy one.

~I know how to FULLY tack and untack.

~I know how to catch a horse in the field and bring him in.

~I researched at home about equine medication, illnesses and treatments.

~I know when and when not to feed/water a horse.

~I have competed in 3 horse shows and got 1st place in all of them.

~I have been riding for a little over 4 years, but ive been interested in horses ever since I could crawl.

~I know how to FULLY groom a horse.

~I am extremely responsible and organized and I have straight A's.

~I know what a horse can't stand, and I know it's areas where it cannot see (such as the front of its forehead etc.)

~I can identify coat colors, markings and most breeds.

~I ALWAYS wear a helmet and I'm aware I can get hurt if something happens.

~I know a horses' sensitive spots.

~I'll be honest with you: I have been having a few problems straightening my back while jumping though, but Im working on it.

~I live about 10 minutes away from my barn, and my sisters know how to drive so they can take me there. I do not live in the city, so getting there shouldn't be a problem.

~I NEVER fool around in the barn or while tending to a horse. Also I don't leave equipment lying around.

~I know how to muck stalls.

~I know a horses' body language.

~I'm aware of all expenses.

~I believe in myself.

If there is anything I've missed please ask me and I'll say if I know or don't know how to do it, ok?

ONCE AGAIN: I DO think Im ready for a horse, so please do not say this:"If you're asking for a horse on this forum, you clearly aren't ready for one". I just want to know what your opinion is.

Im sorry this post was lengthy, but I need all the feedback I can get once again i want to Let you know I really appreciate this. I have wanted a horse forever, as every equestrian has, so I'm going to do something about it. I've been looking into minature horses and checking out the prices at my area. They range from 250-1000. That market isn't going up, if anything it's deteroriating. So I'm getting money for Christmas and I'm baby-sitting but I want to know what ideas you guys can come up with for me to earn money! I know a horse needs food, boarding, turnout, farrier costs (but most minis can go barefoot and our local trimmer said she could go for about 20-30 bucks a trim), and veternary care. Plus the horse will need tack and supplies. (Whew!) I know you're all thinking that I have a racehorse but it's not really mine, just my step-grandfathers, and I'm not allowed to do anything with it. I really want a partnership with a horse!

So I added all this up putting in a little extra and came up with this:

-Board: $30 bucks a month at our local racetrack that houses a couple of minis.

-Food: $40 bucks a month, approximately, could you guys give me other estimates? I'm assuming that forty will be optimal for some hay and possibly grain.

-Farrier: $20-30 bucks every 6-8 weeks.

-Tack: $50 at first. Just for a halter and lead as the horse I'm buying probably won't be halter broke since I'm looking for something that is in good health at the lower price range.

-Veternary Care: Really depends. If you guys could give me good estimates for a mini.

Overall: $100 bucks a month. Sound about right for a little mini?

Now obviously I still have a lot to learn but my goal is to have a mini in approximately one to two years (you can also check out www.savingforamini.blogspot.com). I'm not going to rush into this as there are enough unwanted horses now, but it's something I'm seriously considering. So what do I want you guys to do: Tell me ways to earn money, give me better estimates on the cost of horse care, tell me anything else I need to know! Thank you!

Very New to Horses, A few basic questions

My family has just purchased an acreage. It is ten acres (that could be enough for a horse or two, right?). Please note, I will be doing a TON TON TON more research before getting a horse. I will not get a horse without knowing enough about them, because that would be very unfair to the horse.
I have a few questions. Can you ride outdoors in the winter? What is the lowest temperature that is okay for your horse to be ridden in? What is the best way to heat a barn without causing a fire? Also, should the stall be built so the horse can go in and out of the stall during the day into the field that would be fenced? Or do you have to let your horse in and out during the day? What are some of the best ways to prevent colic? Also, for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with horses, can you buy retired lessons horses (like at stables where they have riding lesssons, do they sell them to people)?

Thanks for your help. I really like horses but they are a lot of work and I want to make sure they are right for me.

Spread the word!

Hi. I want to spread this little mare's story. It's probably a common story, but she wasn't a common horse. I'm sure many of you can relate. So help me spread her story!

Freckles was a Flea-Bitten Gray Arabian who accomplished SO much. She not only was my very first horse, but she was my very first best friend. I started taking riding lessons when I was five years old. As I walked into that stable I feared what I was about to do. I had never been around horses before or any other animal of that size. My riding instructor introduced herself to me and my father, and then introduced me to the prettiest little horse I had ever set eyes. As my dad and her were talking I walked up to that horse. She lowered her pretty dished in face and looked at me with that big gentle brown eye. Right then, I felt something I had never felt before...I knew..This was it..She was the one.

For the next four year we became one. She taught me the lessons that I needed to know. What SHE needed me to know. She taught me how to take care of her, and in turn she took care of me. I wasn't the only one that she cared for though. She was the favorite of the barn.
She taught us all how to ride, gave us the strength that we needed to keep on keepin' on, and she always gave us a soft mane to hide our faces in and dry our tears away when we needed a best friend. She was there, everyday, with a soft knicker when she saw you, letting us know that she knew who we were. Recognizing us, and making us feel like we were on top of the world.

But that's' not how it always was. Freckles didn't always have a loving home, a caring touch, or a bucket of food in front of her. She was abused, beaten with a 2x4 because some heartless soul didn't see what she was, who she was. She was skittish, scared, and dangerous, lacking trust in all men when they rescued her. She was brought back to their warm barn, invited with whinnies from the other horses stabled there. She sank into the back of her stall, wanting to be anywhere else besides where there were humans.

It took months, years to gain her trust back. They did everything they could, everyday. She learned to trust the touch of a human, gentle but firm. She learned that not all men were bad, but still didn't have very much trust in them. It's amazing where she started and how she ended, how something that has gone through that much hurt could be doing what she was doing. Freckles taught SO many children, and adults the lessons in life that she went through, not only through teaching them what needed to be learned about horses, but having her story being spread around, and told.

Freckles lived until she was 36 years old. She passed away in the Fall of 2008 surrounded by the ones who loved her most. Fall was her favorite season, she always felt good in that warm weather, with the crunch of leaves under her hooves as she galloped across pastures and trotted through woods. I can still remember the quiver of her small, delicate muscles, as she waited for me to give her the word.. To run, to just pound away all that worry, all that hurt. I like to think that she runs now, free of all of the pain that humans inflicted upon her. She Flys On Silver Wings. She flies to those pastures that are green and lush of her favorite grasses. She flies with no leather straps, no saddles, no bridles, nothing, as free as she has ever been. She flies with no regret. She flies in our hearts forever and ever. And we HOPE that someday we meet again.

Freckles will be remembered in our hearts as the little mare that could.
All of Freck's life she had to encounter hard time after hard time. She was loved, and in return she loved us back unconditionally. The morning she passed on was the morning that I will never forget.

With her head in my lap, and a warm kiss lingering on her big cheekbone she passed on to greener pastures, the kindest, softest hands, never to be hurt by humans again, to await her best friend. A little shaggy, black, shetland pony named Zoe.

We will always have you running in our hearts, always remember your sweet knicker, always remember when you were there when we needed somebody most.

To never be forgotten, to always be remembered, to never forget her name, in greatest memory of Freckles.

We love you Boo. </3

Which horse is best?

What are the advantages and disadvantage of buying a:

Rescue Horse
Horse that was destined for Slaughter
Pedigree or from a breeder

Just wanted some thoughts/opinions!

Scooter

http://www.facebook.com/#/photo.php?pid=413726&id=520897777
http://www.facebook.com/#/photo.php?pid=126865&id=520897777

I don't know if you'll be able to see these or not. Wanted to Introduce Myself!
Hello! Just wanted to introduce myself.
My friend is pregnant and has offered to give me riding lessons in exchange for keeping her horse from becoming a pasture potato. I love horses. I took lessons when I was 4, but my parent's couldn't afford it after a while. Then, life happened: I moved out, got a job, have a house, got engaged, and now run my own business! So, having a horse of my own is WAY out of my price range, unfortunately...I am SOOOO excited to be riding again!

Angie (my friend) is working with me now on learning how to groom, put a saddle on, things like that. We'll be starting riding in the spring. I'll be learning to hunter jump after we get the basics down. She said she'll even let me show Scooter! Yeah!

If anyone has any suggestions on any books I can read that may help add to my training, I welcome it! I look forward to getting to know you all! I also belong to Cat Fancy Magazine's online community forum where I am a peer moderator there, so I know how tight knit these communities can be and I look forward to making lots of friends!
Rescue Horses+Retired Racehorse

Who has a rescue horse? This is my first time to breed a horse, and I don't know very much about it. Are there other plants toxic to the pregnant mare, like fescue? Do I need to keep her seperate from my geldings at first (one is proud cut)? It's about 11 months being pregnant, right? I have owned horses before but all 15hh and up. This girl is 14.1, but she is a Warmblood/welsh/paint. So she she has the huge stride of a warmblood so it feels like your riding a 16hh horse. She's only 6 though, younger then I would have liked but they told me she is used as a beginner horse in there lesson programs, so when I rode her she is soooooooooooooo calm. I plan to use her for the hunters and possibly jumpers. My coach told me that she has the potential to jump up to 3 ft. When I was riding her, she has a very smooth jump, so I no that would be true. She also has really good conformation to be a good little hunter/jumper. So yes we are buying her.
Take a look.

Here is her "FOR SALE" video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l3Rvb9vGOs

Pic of her trotting - http://www.dhfsporthorses.com/pictures/SummerTrot1.jpg

Head shot - http://www.dhfsporthorses.com/pictures/Summer1.JPG

My boys!

Hello! My name is Bekah, Im 18 years old and a California resident. You know its funny when I tell people that I have horses. They automatically "correct" me and say "you mean your PARENTS have horses". I have to "correct" them and say "no...my horses depend on me...or is it my paycheck?"

I became the proud owner of CallamansTwist aka Twister on June 8th 2009. I had ridden him for years strictly as "my neighbors horse". They decided a year ago that they couldnt afford to have a 23 year old with a history of lameness. "No good" is what they meant. However this horse had seen me through three years of high school and I knew it wouldnt be fair to him to leave so quickly to a new home. Not when I loved him so much. So I made a bargain with my neighbors to pay $100 dollars a month which took care of his hay and nothing else. My parents helped pay for any kind of vet check ups and I paid for grain out of my own funds (as skimpy as they were). I took care of him, got him back up to a healthy weight, then waited for the end of my senior year so he could finally become mine. The day came and I loaded him into that trailer with a smile so wide it could have covered the whole US! I signed papers and Twister became "legally" mine.

However...

My senior project had been the occupation of "horse trainer". My project horse had been a six month old Quarter Horse colt at the ranch that I had been working at. My boss was constantly elbowing me in the side telling me what a great horse "Tank" would make and how we just fit together. She finally got to me and by the time Twister became mine I had agreed to make payments on a full blood registered Quarter Horse colt. He Surfs Savannah aka Tank became legally mine not long after Twister signed on. Now a yearling I watch my two bays side by side in the pasture and wonder at how lucky I am.

I continue to make decisions that about these two that often has me wondering how I suddenly became an adult. I recently discussed gelding Tank with my boss and a fellow trainer at the ranch. We all have come to the decision that my boy is just too handsome to get gelded just yet. As much as I dislike the idea of owning a stud, Tank constantly proves to me that he has the personality of his father and knows a thing or two about paying attention to me first and NOT the ladies. If things start to go downhill then I know I will have to geld him but for now I am willing to let one of his father's last ungelded colts stay a stud a little longer.

PHEW! now that the novel is over!....Twister is doing well at his new home and enjoying the snow that he never ever has gotten a chance to play in. He and I compete in local barrel races and he has earned me my very first check in 3D. He's been wonderfully understanding (seeing how he is the former 1D horse and Im the student rider) and has taught me a lot about the barrels.

I will be breaking Tank to saddle this coming summer in 2010. As I watch him switch leads willy nilly and tuck his hindquarters underneath for flawless slide stops I cant help but daydream about the Snaffle Bit Futurity...he's growing to be just as his name suggests and I know he will make an excellent all around western prospect. His willingness to learn makes me believe he and I can do anything, be it barrels, reining, team roping or penning...hes got the potential to go anywhere and our dreams stay big!

Well well well...I hope you all enjoyed hearing about the two "boys" in my life. I hope to hear about your own babies soon!

IT'S A FILLY! - Tralissa Andalusians

Well, I was right!

Fenda was waxed up yesterday morning and I said to my mum she's gonna go in the night.

We got the foaling stable ready today, finished everything around 10.

She gave birth at around 11:46PM, 2nd June.

We were pretty lucky.

Now her due date was supposed to be 27th of June, but she foaled early. I've waited 12 years for him! He is an OTTB dark bay almost black horse with a bold white blaze on his face and stands at 16hh. He has been off the track for a couple of months now but still needs to be retrain. I have not ridden him yet for that reason. Im glad I have the opportunity of being able to retrain him because I think that will make our bond stronger. Im so excited I can't even explain! When we loaded him into the trailer and was heading home I almost cried, just thinking after all those days and nights of praying, begging and wishing have paid off and my life long dream has come true. Im getting kind of choked up writing this that it has finally happen. I love my horse, Hero Act :) So people please tell me your stories with your dream coming true or people who have owned OTTBs.

Just intorducing myself!

Hey!!
