Almost the same exact thing happened to me. Before my horse passed away a week ago, he was boarded in a public barn. I was getting my saddle out of my mom's car and walked into the barn. My horse wasn't in his stall! I asked one of the staff members and they said some kid I didn't know was riding him! They didn't even ask my permission! I got so angry I wanted to scream.

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

That sounds sooo anoying!!! You should move your horse right away. That is ridiculus!!! Horses are dangerous animals and they can easily get hurt or hurt someone if the handler is handling them incorrectly. Your barn needs to change. I would say put a padlock on your horse's stall but then if an emergency (such as a fire) occured, they would not be able to get her out. The woman who blamed that all on you obviously doesn't care and doesn't repsect you or your horse. Do not spend your money there, they don't deserve it. Get your horse out as soon as possible and until then, make it CLEAR to the owner that if anyone so much as touches your horse again, you will sue. I would also recommend a camera such as a nanny camera in the stall. I feel very badly for you and I hope it works out.

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

ME 2!

I went over yesterday with a friend to help get my winter blanket that I left there and they have a shed that they lock now and one of there kids took it, so i asked the owners ex husband who is there now for some reason and he was yelling at me cause he thought i was blaming his kid....

I'm NEVER going back there again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

Gah. There were these people at my barn who had an odd obsession with my first horse. It started out that they asked if their daughter could brush him because she had fallen and couldn't ride, but was missing horses terribly. So to be nice, we said, "When we are there, you can brush him, but only when somebody's around." It was just getting to the point where it was getting weird, and we asked her to stop. She was saying how she couldn't stand seeing me with him and all this other stuff.

Then one day I get a text message from her sister saying that she rode my horse. :O Needless to say I was mad. Long, long story short we talked to the barn owners and managers and straightened things out. They broke a law by doing that, and are not aloud to even go near my horse. They ended up leaving the farm.

So, it sounds like what these people were doing with your horse was illegal as well. I would talk to the barn owners, then, if the problem persists take legal action.

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

WOW it took forever, but we are finally moving her!! In the event of an emergency, especially a fire but also colic or somethin, your horse might be trapped and people with keys might not be around. If people are still using YOUR horse and YOUR tack, and no one has enough prompt to make some limitations, you should stop spending your money on their carelessness.

Your horse isn't a lesson horse, and you could be blamed for a lawsuit if something happened to another rider. Give the BM/O 's at least a week long warning. If they don't straighten things up and figure it out, then you should pack up your horse, your tack and leave.

If you don't have the option to leave, then PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN!

If you walk in on someone riding your horse, you walk up to your horse, grab it's reins and say "Get the Heck off my horse". If you get there late, and find someone has left your tack on your horse, or left tack laying all over, pick it up and take it with you until you come back the next time.
There are other options to using those locks, Instead of locking a stall, buy a saddle bag and then lock the zippers on that with all your riding tack inside it. If possible, buy a tack trunk and lock that out.
Whenever you go to check on your horse, put a note up on the stall that states: "Use of this horse is strictly for use of owner, any riders that did not get permission from owner will be at risk for a lawsuit"

Hope I gave some helpful hints!!

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

[quote]horseless722 (4/26/2009)

COuld you please explane what you ean by this? Id hate to see another person ride My horse with out any previous permission. its not that we are selfish people and overprotective over our horses, but accidents do happen, and with out the proper care things could turn ugly.Plus its your horse, not theirs. for an example we usually ride our horses at our stables 1 hour a day. and when the horse is being exercised under heavy work, 2 hours a day might seem to much for the horse. therefor if another rider uses my horse i wouldn't be able to ride it. i could but its kind of unfair for the horse. Sometimes your trying to achieve new things with your horse, like starting him on flying lead changes, and all of that hard work could be ruined by a careless foody rider who doesn't know better. its happened to me before... and i whasnt very happy.

Id be very angry if anyone grabbed my equipment without any permission. as some people say " the most expensive thing of having a horse its his equipment (saddle, reins, bit etc)" and to have people leaving it on the ground, using it and not taking care of it, i would explode. you must of had tons of patience. hopefully everything is ok now.

Hopefully you will be able to change stables.

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

Um, I would never let myself/horse get into this situation. If your saddle, briddle, and saddle blankets are pretty expensive, keep them locked up where you keep them, or bring them home and take them every time you go out to ride, or something. Try keeping an unknown video camra by her stall to see who keeps taking your horse. Once you actually see someone taking your horse, you should put up video camras in every cornor of the barn, that way, you can see what they do with your horse.

Hope that helps!

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

Nice example^

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

If hte BM/BO doesnt do anything and it continues go to them and look them in the eye ( and try to keep a straight face). Lock the stall or pasture. Put a camera up. Then ask where and what happened to your horse while its gone be by the camera to get it on tape, and then when you have evidence you can sue 'em lol. I can't believe they have the nerve to do that!

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

Go for it, and keep us updated!

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

oh good idea! :)

I'll take my off campus lunch to my advantage 2moro. If you do, arrive earlier the next time and see if you can catch them redhanded. Since the people are using your schedule to their advantage, this should be a big wake up call.

RE: ummm... thats MY horse....

Basically, what they are doing is theft.

Are there days you don't tend to go to the barn? If so, mix up your schedule around and be there as often as you can. LOCK your tack up - including your saddle and bridle, or keep them in your car so no one else has access to them. Next time you come and find your horse missing or being used, call the police. Report your horse stolen.
