I keep my horses on pasture 24/7, all year, with no blankets. But, you can get a good blanket for around $100, so that's a good alternative stalling during the winter months. Yes, being pastured has some benifits, like increased bone density, and they don't get stall crazy or restless, and you generally don't have to lunge them every time b4 you ride. :D

Good luck!

RE: Monthy Costs

I am looking into buying a horse and the board is $375/mth if you want to keep your horse in a stall and $225 to board in pasture. I've read that pasture board is ideal for their health and happiness. I wonder if I should keep in the pasture during the warm months and switch to stables when winter hits.

RE: Monthy Costs

God, board here is super expensive compared to everywhere else that has been posted! The only way for you to get an accurate estimate of a monthly cost, would be to make some inquiries yourself in your area. Call up local barns and ask about boarding rates, you can speak with veterinarians about recommended vaccinations in the areas and those costs, talk to farriers about services, etc. It may be easiest to find a few horse owners local to you and find out what they spend for different services.

Best of luck :)

RE: Monthy Costs

spring and fall shots?? does you horse get the same shots 2x a year, or do you give different shots at different times. my horses get shots once a year and wormed 5-6 times a year, but we also dont show so they arent exposed to other horses, unless we get a new boarder.

RE: Monthy Costs

Up here in the Norht East things can get a bit pricey for boarding but this is my list.

Farrier bymonthly- $120 if he has shoes $40 without

Vet- Annual shots $500(thats spring and fall) floating $100

Board(indoor ring outdoor ring trails stall and pasture)-550

Feed- $30 grain a month overall hay for one horse around 600

Not including showing and emergency thats what I.

RE: Monthy Costs

All places are of course different.
