I have been riding for almost 6 years and I have switched instructors and had to start over MANY times. But finally, I have reached the ‘Cantering and Jumping’ lessons. I will post his height/breed/age soon but I ride an 'average height' gelding named Kidd in his 'middle-years'. Unless I squeeze with my outside leg, use a crop, and pull his head to the outside he always starts on the wrong lead. Usually this happens when we ride outside, but indoors too. Is it me or him causing the wrong leads? And what can I do to start on the correct lead faster and easier? Also, when we trot small cross rails, he sort of skips over them. Is there any way I can get him to jump it a little bit? Finally, do you have any tips for beginner jumpers? I might be able to get a quick video of me jumping and the trot and canter. Thanks!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

P.S. I just mean in general, nothing fancy. I do think there are far too many, I do think that they make fab riding horses, I don't think they shouldn't race them and I have many more comments to add to that but I'll leave it to you! This was my 3rd time on him. He is a 16.2-17 hh SWB 6 year old stallion. I rode him once 5 weeks ago and coursed 3'6" on him, and he easily can go higher but doesn't have much mileage jumping under saddle. He (unknown to me) had not been worked for the 3 weeks before that, other than the occasional lunging. He then had the next 3-4 weeks off (I was busy at another barn.) I started back up with him a few days ago, and he is definitely feeling fresh. Anyway, the picture isn't a very good one seeing as we are just walking around the rail. I look super sore, because I am- he launched me the previous day. The next several sessions are going to be mostly groundwork/lunging and getting him to re-accept the aids. He is an INCREDIBLE mover, though... can't wait to get videos up once he and I are on a rhythm. *Please don't critique my position... I am pretty sure I was just about to drop my reins or something. Very awkward looking.*

Rode My OTTB For the 1st Time!!!

Hunters Prize: aka: Hunter
Age: 9
Birthday: Feb 9, 2000
Height: 16.2hh (ish)
Color: Grey or Roan (he has a couple brown spots so i guess he qualifies with that. We just walked around a little bit and then i got off but he was PERFECT!

We werent even the only ones in the ring. There were 3 girls riding 2 walking horses and 1 girl attempting to lunge a horse who wasn't having it (which is why i got off. Didn't want to tempt my horse with the sound of the whip. Though it wasn't bothering him then.)

Got back on yesterday (Thursday) and rode for 30 minutes. (again just walking because there were lessons going on in the arena and i didn't want to interfere) but he was AMAZING! He is curious but thats the extent of the ride. He would look over and i'd have to try to get him to focus. But he's doing amazing!

I have a lesson tonight (first one for me in 2 months first one for him EVER!) Well....Saturday I did a local open show with my Hunter horse (a Half Arabian 19 y/o gelding). the show has a mystery class which is more like a fun class and you do get to know what it is before you sign up for it. This time it was what the announcer called "Pole bending, kind of like Barrel bending" (she got her bending and racing words messed up!). So, yeah; pole bending in a cloverleaf pattern.

I have never done any barrel racing on Izzy (my horse), but I signed up along with two other girls who were in western attire (more suited for a speed event than I was. I was in my English attire). Izzy wasn't too sure about starting from a run, that wasn't 'proper' in his mind!!!! But we made it 28 secs and the other two girls each tied at 29 secs!!! Very fun. So that is English Barrel racing ya'll!

How much is she worth?

Hey y'all,

I'm heading off to college in the fall and unfortuneatly, I'm going to have to sell my mare. Free jumped 4'. Never refuses jumps. Does need an intermediate rider, because I would really perfer her to go to a show home and do well, she it a bit strong for younger riders. Nice round canter and big athletic, flat-kneed trot. First time ever jumping a 2'6" course at a show was a the state fair where she placed 5th out of 15. Loads, bathes, clips, ties, trail rides alone or with company. Fast and turns on a dime, could really excell in jumpers, but has nice knees and with a suitable rider could excell in hunters as well (I'm too big for her know.) Dressage prospect as well... Very easy keeper, barefoot. UTD on all shots.

I'm located in Chapel Hill NC

IHSA Show Pics

Pics from my first IHSA show this year. Several years dressage schooling, now starting to work over fences. Suitable for dressage, low jumper, and eventing. Fantastic on the trails-has even packed up the mountains. He is a positive, forward boy who is sensitive and loves to please. Very sweet natured. A gentleman to ride and handle. Great adult Am. or Youth dressage or event horse. Asking $7500 or best offer to good home. He is available for lease at present until sold, but must stay at current facility.

So I was just wondering your experience with CWB's? what do you use them for? Lately, I have been having problems slowing him to a flat walk. His running walk is in tune and collected. But when I try to slow him to a flat walk, he tenses up and basically over-collects to the point where hes below the vertical and his strides are very short. He almost completely loses that traditional head bob. It looks terrible! I'm not being hard on his mouth, but as soon as I let enough pressure off the reins he goes back into a very energetic running walk. Somedays are better than others. I'm starting to think that he may be getting too much feed because the problem starting occuring when we moved him to a much bigger pasture with grass. Although we adjusted his feed intake, it may not have been enough.( he is getting 1 quart of sweet feed on grass daily and he is currently pretty fat) But what doesn't make sense, is that he was skinnier when the problem 1st started so I couldn't really reduce his feed. Does anyone know of a way that I can feed him so that he maintains his weight, but doesn't have all that excess energy?

If you don't think its an energy problem, what are your opinions? Has anyone ever had a problem like this before? I'm just collecting this information for a research project. If you don't believe in it I strongly recommend you try it, the results will amaze you! They sure did for me! There isn't anything wrong with not believing in this, I can totally relate- it's like saying someone with a long nose is snotty. But it is pretty validated. So what do you think? Check one of the polls and then write what you chose (if you want) down below and why! I'm hoping that this information will encourage more people to try it! So I've only ever posted on the NH forum so this is a little different for me! Erm... I ride a 17.3 hh warmblood and I weigh about 90 pounds, when we're practing a canter/gallop ground pole course my instructor always puts out cones so that I don't cut corners and learn to develop finesse. Last lesson I had to gallop two ground poles in four strides and come up around in the canter, change leads (flying) and come down over ground poles set up in a bounce. I mentioned his hands and my weight earlier and my point is that after we change leads and start turning he trots and being a bigger horse he always sends me out of the saddle. What can I do to a) stop him from trotting and b) regain my balance and ask for canter in one to two strides? He is a highly trained dressage horse from Germany so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong as it's so out of character for him!

What do you think of this horse?

I saw this horse online and I fell in love with him. http://www.horseclicks.com/horses/c82389/

I wanna know what you guys think of him and if I should go see him sometime and take him for a test ride. HELP!!!

HI!

okay i need some help...1) im scared to jump. i mean ive jumped before (havent SERIOUSLY jumped scince last year). my instructor said i had a very good jumping position and i could definitley go far, except my nerves kept getting in the way (i saw my friend have a bad fall jumping her gelding a couple years back so i think thats probobly why...that and my mom is always telling me how so and so ended up dying jumping, how you can never trust a horse etc etc). and because of my nerves, the horse would sense it. then eventaully i ended up having a fall because i was a little spazzy that day with my nerves and my horse ended up refusing the jump (i fell off, it hurt like hell, was bruised for weeks). scince then ive only jumped over a little X once a couple months ago when i was trying out a horse.

i seriously miss jumping. i LOVE watching it (u watch horsepower road to maclay and they make it look so easy and fun!). and i love the adrenaline rush you get form it. but every time i see a jump remotley big i'll be like "OMG that looks scary, no way could i ever jump that"...and i hate it evn more because im 17 and ppl are always like, your young, you shouldnt be afraid of getting hurt or anything so i end up feeling like a total coward...anyway heres my first problem: my nerves- how do i get over them???

okay second thing: my new horse rushes his jumps. i want to get back to seriously jumping and he has a HUGE jump and loves jumping but he will usually rush jumps because he's excited. any ideas how to slow him down??

thnx :)

Breeches choice.

I've heard some good things about ovations and they have many different styles.

I own one pair of breeches and they are just a cheap pair. We mostly do bareback up to this point, but I want to get english tack for her. I've always ridden english and prefer it to western. If I use well fitting tack, could I just put english tack on her and be okay? Or would I have to completely retrain her. She uses a curb bit with a chin chain, but I want to put her in a snaffle. How hard would that be?

Tights or Breeches?

I was looking at a pair of tights and was wondering if these looked good.

http://www.statelinetack.com/item/irideon-ladies-boot-cut-tights/SLT900805/

Then I started wondering whether you guys would rather ride/do chores in tights or breeches. I am in need of some new riding pants for schooling and for showing. I was looking at the following. If anyone has any of these, can you tell me how you like them? I don't have any breeches of these brands, so I don't know anything about them. Or can anyone recommend their favorite pair of breeches? I want knee patch breeches, and I don't want to spend a fortune. At the most, $60 per pants. Thanks!

Ariat Sport Low Rider Breeches: http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-35005&cn=4&bhcd2=1253839170#dmtab-3

Tuff Rider Riding Breeches: http://www.doversaddlery.com/tuff-rider-riding-breeches/p/X1-3509/cn/4/

Devon-Aire All Pro Riding Breeches: http://www.doversaddlery.com/devon-aire-all-pro-riding-breeches/p/X1-35377/cn/4/#dmtab-4

And also, what color should I get? I know I want a pair of black ones for schooling, but for showing, should I get beige or khaki? They seem so similar and yet so different. Does it matter what color I get? (I want to start showing in hunters and equitation) Thanks!

Pessoa Saddle

Please help!!! I haven't really been active on here recently at all. So I'll go ahead and fill you all in. I spent most of last year (2008) hurt and not really doing much. At the end of the year my doctor finally believe that I was in a pain and did an MRI which led to surgery on my shoulder. This past year I spent ridign almost daily and competing. I did pretty good, but I wouldn't consider my area as a place with good riders (or judges for that matter).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cndMPls3Pd0

I know I'm doing about a million things wrong, feel free to pick at any or all of them.

Also, generally he (my horse) lacks impulsion and I've really been trying to work on that. Unfortunately, my coach just keeps telling me to 'work on it' and has never actually bothered explaining how he wants me to work on it. So what would you gusy recommend?

Critique Video!

hey everyone! this is a video of my new horse. I've worked on it forever, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. To add to that, I haven't jumped more than 2 feet since my last critique, which everyone told me to do. I read an article(can't remember where) that said something along the lines of "if you lose your balance over a jump, take your support away and it will fix itself". It said to basically not do a crest release, and take away the support you get from your hands and you will have to stay balanced because if you don't you'll fall off(that's what it implied at least).
That is basically an automatic release, right? Taking your hands off the neck and placing them to the side(I know it's more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it, right?)? I know what an auto release looks like and what it is, but I've never done it, so I don't know exactly how to do it or what it feels like. Could someone explain a little bit?

One more little thing, I half-did this yesterday while I was riding. I did a figure eight over a 2' jump in the middle of the arena, changing leads every time I jumped it(this is a real accomplishment with Gilly). I used an opening rein, but I left my other hand on her neck. I didn't feel off-balance, but maybe I was concentrating too hard on turning after the jump.
Sorry if it's a little confusing, I didn't know how to put some of it.

Excersizes to get back into riding

So I've had to take about 3 months off from riding becuase of a really bad ankle injury. I finally convinced someone to go out to the barn with me to take a video and surprise...my riding has changed. My whole position is out of whack! Here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHkZkuFBXFM. I'm leaning forward and my legs are just doing weird things. I feel terrible for my horse! I've started taking lessons again to work on my position. I thought I was getting better, but today I took another video (I have yet to upload it to youtube) and discovered that I have not improved.

So...any have some suggestions? Would riding without stirrups help? I'm currently in graduate school, have two jobs, and am planning a wedding.
