Typically, they're benign (not life-threatening), although they are sometimes very dangerous. They look like odd little lumps on the horse. Grey horses are highly prone to getting them because of their genetics ("grey mutation"), so I doubt that a paint is quite as likely to get them as a grey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_(horse)#The_genetics_of_gray

RE: Melanomas and Paint Horses

question: this will sound incredibly dumb so PLease forgive me.... what are melanomas (spelling?) thanks guys. sorry i am ignorant in most health things besides the common ones.... i know i need to work on that.

RE: Melanomas and Paint Horses

I think any horse that has light skin and gets the cells damaged is at risk for melanomas.

Melanomas and Paint Horses

I know it is normal for a gray horse to get a melanoma but is it normal for a Paint horse to get one?
Thanks a Bunch
