Considering that melanomas are a type of cancer, even if you think they are ok on your horse, please still get your horse checked out by a vet to make sure they are benign and will not metasticize (spread). Because, after all, they are cancer.

It's more common in grey horses.

Not just gray horses can develop melanomas, however gray horses are the only mammals than can develop cancer that is usually not life threatening.

Any horse, or animal for that matter, can develop melanomas. If you think your horse has developed one, contact your vet to have her/him look at it.

^^^ i think my grey has a melanoma, but i looked online and what i read was that around 80% of grey horses get them, but they arnt usually supposed to be dealed with. i knew a little grey pony who had 3 HUGE ones all over her face, poor thing.

Yes, I know of a horse with a couple. It's usually a good idea to have the vet check them--they're probably not dangerous, but they could be, and even if they aren't, they could become dangerous.

Melanomas are a form of skin cancer. Typically, they're benign (not life-threatening), although they are sometimes very dangerous. They look like odd little lumps on the horse. Grey horses are highly prone to getting them because of their genetics ("grey mutation"), so I doubt that a paint is quite as likely to get them as a grey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_(horse)#The_genetics_of_gray

I think any horse that has light skin and gets the cells damaged is at risk for melanomas.

I know it is normal for a gray horse to get a melanoma but is it normal for a Paint horse to get one?
