Is it true that draft horses don't live as long as smaller breeds? (such as thoroughbreds, arabians, quarter horses)

That is true.

Generally draft horses live to be around 20-25 ish.. but now horses seem to be living longer than before.

Ponies can easily live to be in their 30's.

yes, its completly true i have two percherons and a spotted draft, they tend not to live as long because they are bigger,  like a pony can live in its late 30s, because they have the same size heart byt because the pony is so much smaller their heart has to work lass, just like the probibility of a jack russel will livinglonger than a great dane is most likly.

Life span has nothing to do with the heart "working more or less" depending on the breed. You have to take into account genetics, what the breed is prone or more susceptable to, standard of living, etc. Just like large dogs, draft horses tend to have a smaller life span than the smaller horses, but this does not mean that they cannot live just as long with excellent care, proper feeding, etc.

ive had many poeple and vets and draft breeders tell me that is how it works...it does have some to do with it, there are other factors like the ones you mentioned...

There are a lot of reasons and variabilities that go into why or what causes them to generally have a shorter life span, however...it is a GENERAL assumption. Heart health and diet/exercise are involved, however so is your horse (obviously) and their spirit, actual size, and overall well being throughout their lifespan, so many things can take place to prolong life or shorten it, every draft horse (not breed) is different, and can live longer than others or shorter. Don't assume ALL drafts are the same, good diet, right exercise/love/vet check-ups and medicines + a spirited horse with a strong will could spell a good 30 years. Then again, it could all be meaningless. The bottom line is, yes, great danes live shorter lives generally, so do Draft horses. But by no means is this a guidline that you have to go by, nothing is set in stone. Try your best to give your companion a long life of love and good health.
