What is the latest time into a pregnancy a horse can without really showing/ before her belly started popping out? Can a horse be a "last minute" belly popper?

I know its the last 3 month the foal will grow the most in her belly.

It just that my mare (Cheyanne) isn't really that big (just looks nicely fed) compared to my Mom's horse (Shylo). Cheyanne was bred about 1 1/2 weeks before Shylo and if both are pregnant they are 6 months along. And when I compare the two you can tell Shylo is pregnant while Cheyanne don't look pregnant.

I wanted to do an utrasound on my mare but didn't really have extra money to do it earlier. I am having the vet out in the spring to check them over and give vaccines.

Some horses won't show a whole lot....especially a first foal....til later.  But there is a "trick".   It works....but it's an old timer trick.

Take a string (or tie two baling twines from a hay bale together) and wrap it around her chest....like a surcingle.  Hold on to the point where the end meets the rest of the string.   Then take the string and wrap it around her belly.....just about where her belly usually begins to go up toward the udder.   If this length is the same or longer.....she's pregnant.  If it's shorter, she's not.

I just did this last year.   I had a mare who had been vet-checked in foal in April, but by October, she was open.   I had another who was due at the same time, and it worked.  And I did get a lovely filly last week out of that one!!

My blog:  www.horselistening.blogspot.com

It didn't take 1 day to create.....it won't take 1 day to fix.

Thanks for the tip. I will have to try that little trick with the string on my mare!

I am having the vet come out in April to check our horses over, find out if my mare is pregnant for sure or not, and give them their vaccines. Almost so curious whether or not my mare is pregnant that I hate waiting another month for the vet to come check her out! Hopefully she will start showing signs of pregnancy (if she is pregnant) soon :)

UPDATE ON MY MARE:

She 100 % pregnant!!

Had the vet out over the weekend because she wasn't acting her self. Pawing at ground, laying down, and just seem uncomfortable. The vet check her over said she was fine but may be a little colic or a gasy stomach. He gave her 2 shots and took a stool sample to test. Checked for a pregnancy and said she was. He said it was really little and being a first foal she wasn't going to show much til the end. Both mother and baby are doing fine, he said. And Cheyanne acting like her normal self again.

YAY! Congrats on your first foal! I was a little worried for you at first when I read your post, but then I read the update and I'm glad you are around knowledgeable people! Foals are amazing. I've always wanted one!

I can't wait until the new foal is born! Cheyanne is due around mid July and that seems like so far away to me. Curious to see what its going to look like and if it is a boy or a girl. I hope its a comes out a palomino paint filly (one of my dream horse). For those who don't know: Cheyanne is a solid palomino and I bred her to a sorrol/white tobiano paint.

Cheyanne starting to get a little belly on her finally! The vet said that since it was her first foal and she has a little baby she not going to show til late.

UPDATE: Today Cheyanne is 8 months into her pregnancy! Only 3 more months to go and I can hardly wait :) I already have a few possible names picked out for the foal to be. I have a few girl and boy name which started out as a list of 6 names of boys and 6 for girls. Now I have it down to 3 girl and 2 boy names that I like best! I will have to wait and see what name will fit it best after it is born. I will keep everyone updated on how Cheyanne is doing and let you all know when she has her baby! But for now just keep any tips or advice coming this way.

UPDATE:

My mom and I are starting to think that we are wrong on the due dates for both our horses. Instead of being due at the middle and end of July we are thinking they are due a month earlier. So we are not 100% sure when my horse (Cheyanne) or my Mom's horse (Shylo) is due to foal.

You see last year when we bred the horses the owner (Phil) of the stud did pretty much all the work of making sure they got bred. Shylo and Cheyanne were both put with the stud in July. However, Phil told us that Shylo tried to kick at the stud so we assumed she wasn't ready. We ended up trying again in August and was told it was successful that time. As for Cheyanne, I was told that she was bred in July successfully. Then in August when I was riding Cheyanne and got close to the stud, She was acting like she was in heat. So we thought she didn't take in July and went ahead and put her with the stud again. This time I was there and saw them do their thing. That why we thought they were both due for sure in July.

When we had the vet out to check Cheyanne back in March, he thought that Shylo was so big at the time and was shocked to hear she was due in July. The vet thought that we had to be wrong on her due date and said he don't think she will make it til end of July. So we are assuming that she did get bred in July and is due end of June. As for Cheyanne, I was just over visiting her the other day (we board at the place the stud is at) and notice her tits were starting to bag up (fill with milk). Shylo even looks like she starting to bag up some. I went online and doubled checked on what I read before about horse pregnancy; to find out that they start to bag up about a month to 1 1/2 months before they are due to foal. Which would make the two due in June instead of July. Plus I recall from reading somewhere that mares can come in heat the next month after being bred and make you think she wasn't bred. When in fact its very misleading and she is actually pregnant.

SO ANY ADVICE OR ANYTHING ON SIGNS TO WATCH OUT FOR AS THEY GET CLOSER TO DUE DATE THAT WILL HELP US BE MORE ACCURATE ON WHEN THEY ARE COMING DUE TO FOAL?
