why dont you look into taking her to a horse rescue? as everyone said most people looking for a riding horse at auction wont buy a lame one. what have the vets said about her? if shes "unfixable" the best thing to do is put her to sleep. As for your other horse, it could be dangerous if she is alone and never has been. Try to seperate them for increasing amounts of time each day. You may want to get some ace pills from the vet, to calm her down when you take the other horse to a new home.

Don't take the horse to the auction. Look into a rescue or sanctuary so the horse can live the rest of her years in peace. Think about it before having the horse killed. Just stop and think about it.

hey, some people are just blunt and to the point on here. Don't take it personally, they just will tell you straight and to the point about what's what.
I do have to agree. If you want your mare to go to a good place, then the best you can do is euthanize her or something like it. My mare was 23 y.o. when we put her down. I thought about selling her too, but I don't like the idea of someone hauling my loved mare to some slaughter plant. She had strangles and a heart murmur, so I did some research and found that euth. here was much more than just using a 30-06 and getting her hauled away. I would have kept her and buried her on my property, but she was sick so I didn't want that to stay here.
If you really feel that bringing her to an auction is the best way you could handle it, then go ahead and do it. This is going to be a hard decision to make, but do what you think is right.
Hope this helped.
Now I remember why I left...

I think someone else suggested this as well: maybe a horse rescue could take your lame horse? Then you wouldn't have to deal with the idea of her dead or going to a slaughter house. I think that it'd make you feel better if she just went to a rescue. So look in your area and see if you kind find a good rescue. Before you give her to a rescue, make sure you go to their house and look it over, that way you know that they're not a fake and your horse is going to a good home.

Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to get a horse!GraceBorn September 11, 2001

this is my first time here and i have alot of expierecne with horses but i didnt know that. you dont have to be a jerk about it. almost everybody who replyed except for 2 people were jerks. and you know what my spelling has nothing to do with this the "p" is messed up on my computer ^^ Lovely way to show off your maturity. But here's what I have to say to you: 1. If you want your horse to have a good 90% chance of going to the slaughterhouse, then sell him at an auction. 2. If you don't want your horse to be slaughtered or in pain, then give him a good ending with euthanization. 3. If you want your horse to stay living, then spend lots of $$ on making him all drugged up, but in the long run he will never be happy and there is no point keeping a lame unuseable horse that serves no purpose except for a pasture ornament and that costs $$. Grass, water, drugs, feed, hay, vet bills if he gets sick, shoes/correction shoes, and the list goes on. 4. So what do you propose to do? Give her a good ending and be pain-free, or go to slaughterhouse and die a horrible death? Graphic, I know, but it is the sad truth. None of this has anything to do with 'being a jerk'. It has to do with just plain trying to get this to you in a quick and orderly fashion. Not many people are going to knowingly take in a horse with bad injuries/issues, unless they are rescue people. I don't know if it is even possible to give a non-abused horse to rescuers, but I'm sure you can work something out.

| First I would like to ask why isn't anyone addressing her original question? Not everyone who sells their old horses at auction are cold hearted idiots. In my area euthanasia is about $300-500. I do not know of any horse sancuaries in my area. Would it be better if the horse was dropped off at a stranger's house? That happens alot in my area. I am sure the writer is tore up enough without having some jump down her throat. It would be different if she asked for this but the question had nothing to do with auctions. I wish there wasn't a need for slaughter but sadly there is. I agree that lounging her away from her buddy might help. Can you haul her somewhere by herself and then work? If I just ride from my house Cajun won't listen to me. If I take him to town(I use the arena at the fairgrounds) he works great, obviously not the first few times. He minds better by himself in town. Maybe this won't work for you, but it does for me.

| The people who are telling you not to sell her at an auction are not 'being jerks'. They are just concerned with the wellfare of the horse, and it angers me to think that you would even consider auction, you can't know who the horse goes to or what happens after they're sold. I'm not being rude here, I'm just saying. If she's in pain and she's suffering have her euthanized, it's really the best thing for her. About the other horse, I have the same problem with my gelding that I'm trying to fix, I think that what past posters have said is good advice and should help.
