Honestly, I suggest euth-ing her.

Horse doesn't have a use, so won't be able to be resold. Rescues are overrun, give-aways are unreliable...

You can't keep her, and it's not a good idea to simply pawn her off to someone else.

Euthing seems to be the only viable option.

Plus, if you think we're being jerks NOW, you obviously haven't been on these boards that long.

Yes, of course, we're horrible human beings. How dare we care about your horse's welfare?

Good grief.

Society does not need more children; but it does need more loved children. Quite literally, we cannot afford unloved children - but we pay heavily for them every day. There should not be the slightest communal concern when a woman elects to destroy the life of her thousandth-of-an-ounce embryo. But all society should rise up in alarm when it hears that a baby that is not wanted is about to be born. ~Garrett Hardin

Not everyone who sells their old horses at auction are cold hearted idiots. In my area euthanasia is about $300-500.

Cold hearted idiot? No.

Irresponsible? Yes.

If you're going to have a horse, you should be able to have the money to take care of it. Yes, euthanasia can be expensive. But guess what? That's what you get when you have a horse.

In owning a horse, you are responsible for their life, and in turn, their death. You can't afford to give your horse a humane death, you shouldn't own that horse.

It wouldn't be as big of a deal if slaughter was legal in the US. Humanely done, there is nothing wrong with slaughter. But, Mexico isn't humane. Knowingly and willingly sending your horse to a Mexican slaughterhouse? That is not fair to the horse, and I will judge you for that.

Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but captive bolts usually are cheaper than euthing and just as (if not more so) humane. It's also something you can DIY. Disposal is another matter, but lots of rendering plants etc... will take it body off your hands.

If she's worried about expenses, an experienced hand and a 12-gauge shotgun are humane and effective.

I'm not kidding, by the way if anyone thinks I am.

^I agree entirely.

Honestly, I've heard that a bullet to the brain is more humane than euthing. Euthing is usually done because it's easier on the people, not the horse.

watching a horse being euthanized is one of the worst experiences I have ever gone through. I have seen it twice and neither were different althought I would much rather that than the mexican slaughter house anyday
