my horse luvs 2 stik her tongue out the left side of her mouth. we hav decided that shes just happy. she does it when we give her a carrot, groom her, or ride her. shes a very happy horse most of the time. we just dont no why she stiks her tongue out. her dam did that 2.

(u can see her tongue in the pic of the flea-bitten gray thoroughbred at the bottom)

A horse i used to own did that while he was riding. We competed in hunters so my trainer was a little worried, but he never did it at shows. He only did it at the barn when we would get a nice working gait going and he would be really relaxed. I think he just did it for something to do. We checked out the bit and his teeth and everything but we never found another explanation for it. Its really not a big deal. She probably just does it for fun like you said

Nice advice. But even on the trail when she is worked up, spooky, and super sweaty she still does it. You're probably right that she does it for fun or is a habit. Thanks!

its kind of like a habbit horses develope.. some... kind of like whind sucking horses .... but unlike those, the toungue sticking habbit is not bad... tough i've heard that if horses stick their tounge out at shows such as a dressage test, you get penalized because of it. im not sure i have to take a look up on that. i've also heard that there are devices that keep the horse from doing so.

tough i find it kind of cute when horses do that. :)

I find it super cute when she does it! 1 day she didn't do it, and I got really worried! It turned out she had a painful abcess in her hoof! So, now I'm really glad she does it now

Hi Canny,

We have a horse that will stick her tongue straight out a few inches.

We were told once that she is biting her own tongue and that horses will sometimes do this because it releases endorphins and gives them sort of a natural high, similar to twitching!

For the record, in regard to one of your previous posts, we don't twitch!

I am sure that there is a time and a place for it but usually when we aren't getting the results from our horses that we expect, we question our approach or our methods before reaching for a tool or device.

Anyway, for what ever reason our Lady sticks her tongue out we think that it is cute as well...
