I ride bareback most of the time. Sometimes there are bareback classes in 4-H and other horse shows, but not usually.

Actually, there are no rules in the North Dakota (where I live) 4-H judging guide that say you cannot ride in western classes without any tack.  I trained my two and a half year old quarter horse to "indian ride" without a saddle or bridle. If you work from the ground up, almost anything is possible. If you really work on leg pressure, your friends will be amazed at what you can do without a saddle or bridle. (and so will you!:)  If your horse gets spooky when you ride him bareback and you don't feel you can handle him well with the halter, just use the bridle and reins when you go out for awhile.

I understand now being allowed to ride bridless, but the stable doesn't allow bareback, either? That's just crazy. Do you know the reason behind that rule?

No bareback?! Thats a ridiculous rule. If you want to and its not unsafe for others in the arena, then you should definately be allowed to ride bareback. I understand the no bridleless part. but bareback should be allowed.

I love riding bareback. I've gotten to lazy to tack up though since im not leasing anymore i hardly get to ride. But i got 5th of 14 in my bareback class after 2 days of riding bareback!

Hopefully when i get my tb started he will be good bareback after a while.

i really don't understand the rule about barebak ridin. i learned how 2 ride 1st by barebak. my 1st western trainer believed i should get the feel of the horse be4 i was allowed the privilege of a saddle and i aabsolutely agree with her! my balance and position is probably better than if i had used a saddle 1st. i actually use a halter when i go bridleless in the arena just incase she ran off with me. but when im in the round pen by myself, i can go with nothin. i was actually lookin around about a neck ring. it's really just a stiff rope that goes around the horse's neck and that's the only thing u use 2 guide the horse, includin ur legs of course. but they say it's only 2 be used 4 experienced riders that hav a strong bond with their horses. but my trainer says she's all 4 it!
