You have received some excellent advice so far. It all depends on the horse and the temperament of said horse. I have a Morgan cross now that in no way would I recommend as a good child's horse. I've known / owned QH types that went the range of horse temperaments (some were great for children and others not. In addition, I once had a welsh cross/mut (kind of looked like a rocky mountain horse, but I have no idea). He had the perfect temperament for being a child's horse and was the perfect size. I have only limited knowledge of shetland ponies (mostly second hand) and would not recommend them at all. But again, that is based on limited knowledge. I am sure there are a few very wonderful shetlands out there that have the perfect temperament. Good luck!

aqha r usually nice. people often say tbs r very bad 4 kids, but i got my ottb when i was 8 and trained her myself. i think it depends on the horse and kid. is the kid calm and confident or hyper and nervous? i was always very calm around horses and was never scared so the tb was usually calm with me. my lesson horses, justin and charlie, are brother and sister: half welsh half rocky mountain. i agree that rocky mountains r good-tempered and really dont spook. but every1 else hav great suggestions 2!

I'm a TWH person, and gaited horses are great, just be careful. They can be wonderful, but many of the breeds ca be slightly "high-strung". It really just depends on the horse. My TWH mare is kinda hot, and can be a real pain, but if you put a kid on her, she's a total babysitter.

Thanks Sunny06 for the siggy!

many good suggestions so far. I've always known paints and qh's to be sweet (for the most part of course there's exceptions) but i also know of a few beginner tbs at my barn. It depends on personality.
