Whats your best and worse barrel times? I just started training my 6 year old QH Mare for barrel racing, and at a lope we are getting 19 seconds!

I know this really doesnt have anythin to do with time. But i was just wondering, how did you start teaching your mare on barrels at the lope? I've been starting to lope around the barrels in both leads bcuz when i tried loping the pattern he just swung his hind end out and did not use it at all, but when i lope around the barrels (not on the pattern) he did much better. he's getting better at it, the place where i board doesnt have an indoor arena but its been raining for like weeks straight!

Well she still slows down when we go around a barrel, she usualy slows to a trot, sometimes a walk. Except the final barrel. But also remember, when you are training your horse to game, never let them run back unless you are running for a time, or your horse is just going to blow that last barrel to book it home. But if you want to get your horse to lope around the barrels, do what I am doing right now, just run the pattern like once a day if possible. They will get the hang of it. Start them slow then, with just walk/jogging the pattern until they get it down, then speed it up.

Yep. I started teaching Shine barrels/poles in August right after fair. He somewhat knew the pattern as I did barrels and poles on him last year. He has been doing really good at trotting barrels and poles, he can do it automatic, w/ me using one hand on the reins and holding onto the horn. Thats why i started teaching him to lope barrels because he's being doing awesome at the trot and i decided to move up to a lope. Since this year I've been doing really good at trot poles/barrels. I started out this year recieveing 3rd and now I've placed 1st two times in a row and I only showed 2/4. The first show he had a heat stroke and then on top of that coliced. But anyways... I have been practing loping just around the barrels to begin with. I think i will wait till I feel that he's listening to me to actually lope barrels yet. And my trainer taught me after the last barrel push his shoulder all the way to the rail so that he doesnt "blow the barrel" when your doing the real thing (donno if that makes senese) Thanks for your help
