Hi,

I was wondering if Quarter horses are good a jumping?

I usually ride 3ft, and I'm ready to go higher to at least 3'6''. The other day I was offered a half lease for a Quarter horse right down my road (that I could bike to in less than 2 minutes.) My dad liked the fact it was close, the half lease was cheap, and that the barn the horse is in does a mixture of everything. The horse, who I am going to visit and ride on Sunday, apparently does Western, a little bit of Eq, and tiny bit of cross country. As of right now, I don't know much about the horse other than that.

I know that may not help you, but if you know anything about Quarter horses' jumping abilities, please post. Thanks so much, it iis greatly appreciated.

AQHAs are just horses. They can do anything a normal horse can. Although I HAVE heard that their jumping skills are relatively good.

I don't jump but its all going to depend on the horse's build, scope, atheltic ability etc. Not their breed.

I agree with that.

And I own a Quarter horse who my sister jumps and he's very good. But it doesnt really matter about the breed. Maybe you should test him out first.

Thanks for the posts!

I rode her today and she was amazing! This horse could jump 4' no problem! And she didn't do it sloppily either, she was scopey and really did it well rounded. I was very impressed. From her tiny size I thought she wouldn't be able to do it and she could. Also, yesterday she went on a hunter pace which was 7 miles long!

Definatly a really nice horse, I'm praying my parents will let me lease her!

Thanks so much for all your imput, and like Hoodsey said (I think I spelled it right), it it really isn't the breed, it's the horse's ability.

thats good things went well. I leased a qh mare. She was 18 and still jumps. I'm not a jumper but she has taken me over a 2 foot fence before no problem (i just wont go higher. i bet she could).

Its all the horse. Not the breed. but she sounds amazing. Best of luck!

my 2 lesson horses i ride, justin and charlie(a girl), r both AQHAs and they r the best jumpers in our barn! even tho they r only about 14.3 hands, they can jump pretty high. charlie has a bad stifle, but she still likes jumpin and it doesnt seem 2 bother her. altho when she goes over trottin polls, she has 2 canter. i also owned an appendix QH and i traine her myself. she turned out 2 be a very neat jumper, with her legs tucked perfectly when she jumped. anyway, i'd definitely recommend leasin the horse!

Ya know as others have said a qh is just a horse. Now if the horse is lets say a pig on a rope qh ( halter over muscled impressive type) qh then chances are they wouldnt be able to lift the bulk over a pole on the ground let alone over a 3'+jump.

The horse ability  of course depends on conformation and other things BUT much of it comes from the skill or rider and trainer. WWWAAAAaayyyyyy back in the early 80's when the Tb's was the horse to have on all circutsI had a 15.2 with shoes on qh 68 modle so not a refined  horse she could with out blinking an eye do 6'. That is when she wanted to... But then again she was a mare and a chestunt one to boot so I was recieving the heel end of the boot to begin with...
