Hey everyone, I have a problem and maybe all you kind horse folks out there can help.

I have a 20 year old quarter horse mare and we found out that she is microchiped well we want to change the registration from the old owners to us easy right?

worng, when we went to the vet that microchiped the mare we found out that they only do dogs and other small animals NOT horses so how do we go about changing the registration?

Where I live, the equine hospital can scan them for you. Also, there is an auction every two weeks that when the horses are checked in, they are scanned for chips. Maybe you can check in your area for someone who does do horses; such as an auction. Sorry I couldn't help more.

If you can get hold of a scanner, you can get the microchip's manufacturer and the chip's ID number. However, you will need some sort of proof that you bought the mare (her papers, or a bill of sale), otherwise the microchip company won't change the information on the horse's owner in their database.

The way most microchips work isn't like a dog tag. The owner's name and address aren't on it - all that's there is the manufacturer's ID and the chip number. Then the person with the scanner has to input the chip number into the maker's website or look it up using a more sophisticated scanner made specifically by that chip maker, and that's how they get the owner's info.
